December 1, 2020
Our local non-profits work tirelessly and with open hearts throughout the year providing information, building awareness, and raising funds for our community members in need. With group gatherings being limited this year, people are thinking creatively about how we can continue to help while staying safely distanced.
HELPING LOCAL FAMILIES
The Brighton Christmas Hampers program, a long-running program providing food, clothing, toys, etc. to families in need is running again this year. Hand-knit items are being collected at Trinity St. Andrews United Church on Chapel Street, and Evangel Pentecostal Church on Butler Street is the main drop-off location for all other types of donations. Donations received by December 14 will be delivered to those in need before Christmas. Please call Evangel at 613-475-2444 for more information.
TOYS FOR LOCAL KIDS
The Bargain Shop in Brighton is celebrating their “Fill a Sleigh Day” on Sat. December 5. Purchase toys to fill the sleigh in-store, and 10% of all sales on that day will also be donated to a local toy drive.
B&H Carpet Sales Ltd. in Brighton is accepting unwrapped donations of gifts for children (infants – teenagers) as part of the Brighton Legion’s Angel Tree Initiative (see flyer). Donations can be dropped off to the B&H Staff at 41 Elizabeth Street, Brighton, during regular business hours Monday – Saturday or to the Brighton Legion directly until December 9. PROGRAMMING FOR DIFFERENTLY-ABLED YOUNG ADULTS
Sunny Days Group Program, a Brighton non-profit organization assisting differently-abled young adults, is running the Sunny Days Auction, an online auction running November 23 – December 6. All proceeds will go toward daily operating costs. To participate and bid on local items generously donated by local businesses and groups, you must join the Facebook Group “Sunny Days Auction”.
Looking for a local live Christmas tree for your home? Brighton Councillor, Mark Bateman, and Classic Rock 107.9’s York Bell-Smith will be delivering trees from J&D Christmas Tree Farm from November 28 – December 20, with all proceeds also going to Brighton’s Sunny Days Group Program.
SUPPORTING OUR SENIORS
Stockings for Seniors is a local group seeking donations to bring joy to some local seniors who may otherwise be alone this year over the holidays. Donations can be dropped off in Brighton until December 6 at Just Like Granny’s (40 Prince Edward Street) and Rocia Naturals (8 Loyalist Drive, Suite 8) during regular business hours. Donation ideas available at the SFS Facebook page.
STOCKING FOOD BANKS
A fun way to support our local Brighton Fair Share Food Bank this year is to bring your pups for pictures with Santa at the Brighton Bark Park (118 County Road 64) on Sat. December 12 between 12-2 pm. A canned/dry goods donation is encouraged. Otherwise, donations are always accepted at the Food Bank itself located at 39A Elizabeth Street, Brighton on Mondays and Wednesdays from 9am-noon.
Finally, in lieu of the CP Holiday Train stop in Brighton that so many of us enjoy each year, there is a Holiday Train at Home virtual concert on December 12 at 8 pm EST. Canadian artists, Serena Ryder and the Trews, headline and monetary donations will be accepted virtually to support Canadian Food Banks. For more information, visit CP Holiday Train Website.
All of the above opportunities can also be viewed on our door window at 41 Main Street, Brighton. While there, check out all of our local home and land listings.
